John Mathews is a testament to the power of the human spirit to overcome adversity. At 22 years old, John had hit rock bottom. Like so many others in this country, he had succumbed to an opioid addiction that had torn through every aspect of his life. Broke, desperate, and on a short path to either prison or death, John knew he needed help. Aided by a Methadone clinic, sheer will, and mental fortitude, John managed to get clean.
He spent the next decade making amends and rebuilding the life that his addiction had nearly destroyed. He became a husband and a father while working his way through school and training to become a paramedic, followed by a career in the fire department. That career led him to become the Assistant Mayor for Sevier County Emergency Services, where he managed one of the most significant natural disasters in the country, the 2016 Gatlinburg wildfires. He now serves as the Vice President of a multi-million-dollar company and is a consultant, speaker, author, and proud father.
He speaks on the importance of setting and achieving goals and the power of positive thinking. His hope is that by sharing his experience with others, he can encourage and educate people about addiction and the process of healing and growing forward with positivity and grace.
